Paonia serves as the focal point for agricultural and irrigation development at the base of the Gunnison National Forest. The landscape is defined by the North Fork Gunnison River and an extensive network of water management features, including the Fire Mountain Canal, Farmers Ditch, and Stewart Ditch, which support the orchards and farms on Pitkin Mesa and Garvin Mesa. To the northeast, the terrain rises sharply toward Jumbo Mtn and the Terror Cr Reservoir, where the mountain-fed waters of Terror Cr are captured for downstream use.
