Paonia and the surrounding agricultural mesas define the lower reaches of this Delta County landscape, where the North Fork Gunnison River carves a path through the valley floor. High-altitude irrigation is central to the area's development, evidenced by the extensive network of the Fire Mountain Canal, Farmers Ditch, and Stewart Ditch that feed the productive lands of Garvin Mesa and Pitkin Mesa. To the north, the terrain rises sharply into the Gunnison National Forest, reaching toward landmarks like Windy Point and the timbered slopes of Spruce Stomp.
