The Blue Ridge mountains define the western boundary of this Albemarle County landscape, where the Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through the high elevations of Shenandoah National Park. Small agricultural and residential communities like Mountfair, Doylesville, and the namesake Browns Cove are situated along the lower slopes and valley floors.

Transport patterns are dictated by the mountain gaps, most notably Browns Gap, which provides a historic passage through the range via the Browns Gap Tpke. Local family history is preserved in small burial sites across the township, including the Mount Carmel Cem and Sandridge Cem.
