Coteau des Prairies, a vast glacial upland plateau, defines the topographic character of this Hamlin County landscape. This 2015 survey reveals a sparse, rural grid system typical of the eastern South Dakota plains, dominated by agricultural section lines. Significant for local historians and genealogists are the isolated burial sites that dot the landscape, including Kellerton Zion Cem and New Hope Lutheran Cem, which often represent the only remaining physical landmarks of early Norwegian and German immigrant congregations in the region. The map also records the presence of the Pioneer Cem and the expansive waters of Lake Marsh in the southeast corner. The network of section line roads, such as New Hope Rd and 185th St, provides a clear view of the structured land division that has persisted since the nineteenth-century settlement era.
