About this map

The Little Missouri River carves a winding path through the western edge of Harding County, defining a landscape marked by isolated buttes and the expansive Custer National Forest. Compiled from topography by N. H. Darton and rapid reconnaissance, this 1930s-era survey documents the early road network of the High Plains, including the intersection of Highway 85 and Highway No. 8 at Buffalo. The map reveals the settlement pattern of a sparsely populated frontier, where small outposts like Ladner, Bullock, and Camp Crook served as vital hubs for the surrounding ranching country. Landforms such as the Cave Hills and Campbell Hills dominate the northeastern quadrant, providing natural landmarks in an area where water sources like the South Fork Grand River and numerous creeks including Antelope Creek and Boxelder Cr dictated the placement of homesteads and early townships.
