Lake Champlain defines the western edge of this 2015 study, where the urban centers of Burlington and Winooski meet the rugged shoreline at Lone Rock Point and Red Rock Point. The landscape is a mix of dense university campus life at the Univ of Vermont and Champlain College and preserved historic sites. The Winooski River winds through the northern section, dropping over Winooski Falls and through the deep Winooski Gorge before crossing under the Winooski River Bridge.

Genealogists will find a high density of burial sites including the Fort Ethan Allen Cem and the Hebrew Holy Society Cem. Transport infrastructure is prominent, from the Burlington International Airport and Sky Acres Airport to the tracks of the Vermont Railway.
