The Los Pinos River carves a deep valley through the high mesas of northern San Juan County, feeding into the northern reaches of the Navajo Reservoir. The landscape is dominated by a complex network of named drainages including Cemetery Canyon, Wool Canyon, and Garcia Canyon, which dissect the flat-topped Burnt Mesa. This terrain reflects the traditional livestock and water-management history of the Four Corners region, evidenced by the Mentzel Ditch and the isolated settlement at Young Place in the northeast.

To the south, the terrain transitions toward the confluence with the San Juan River near Spruce Canyon. A series of resource roads, such as Pine River Rd and various county routes, provide access to the mesa tops and deep recesses like Dick Earl Canyon.
