Zuñi River meanders across the southern portion of this landscape, carving a low-lying valley through the high desert of Apache County. The terrain is defined by a series of dramatic drainages, most notably Hardscrabble Wash, which cuts a north-south path through the eastern townships. In the northwest, the Cedar Lake Reservoir sits at the head of Cedar Lake Wash, serving as a primary water source in an otherwise arid environment. This 2021 survey illustrates a sparse settlement pattern dominated by large-scale land divisions, including t15n r27e and t16n r28e, reflecting the region's enduring character as open ranching or conservation land. The contour lines reveal a complex topography of mesas and draws that guide the seasonal flow of water toward the river basin.
