The forest-dominated landscape of Sharon Valley and Challenge defines this section of the northern Sierra Nevada foothills. Much of the terrain is managed as part of the Plumas National Forest and Tahoe National Forest, characterized by steep ridges like Empire Ridge and high points including Pike County Peak and Oregon Peak. The eastern edge of the quadrangle is dominated by the waters of the New Bullards Bar Reservoir, which flooded several river bars along the North Fork Yuba River, though Sucker Bar and Missouri Bar remain noted as landmarks along the northern reaches.
