Coconino National Forest defines this high-desert landscape in northern Arizona, where water management is etched into the topography through a complex system of tanks and seasonal catchments. The terrain is marked by significant geographic features like the prominent Canyon Diablo and the deep incision of Chavez Draw. A series of natural and improved basins, including Long Lake, Soldier Annex Lake, and Tremaine Lake, provide critical water sources in a region characterized by volcanic features like Crater Lake and the sweeping Broomy Valley. The historic corridor of Chavez Pass sits between the elevations of Chavez Mtn and the meadows of Lockwood Park, illustrating the importance of natural gaps for movement through the high country. Throughout the area, numerous livestock and wildlife catchments such as East Soldier Tank and Antelope Tank highlight the ongoing ranching and conservation efforts within the forest boundaries.
