The Allegheny River carves through this northern Pennsylvania landscape, punctuated by several named islands including Harmon Island, Dixon Island, and Wardwell Island. In the early 21st century, the river's path is closely followed by Riverside Dr, connecting small riverside settlements such as Hemlock, Wardwell, and the riverbend landing at Shipmans Eddy. To the northeast, the Allegheny Reservoir and the Kinzua Pumped Storage Reservoir dominate the higher elevations near the Allegheny National Fish Hatchery.

The southern portion of the area transitions into a dense network of valleys and runs, where the community of Clarendon serves as a central hub. Surrounding neighborhoods and hamlets like Clarendon Heights, Old Clarendon, and Stoneham follow the rail and road corridor along Dutchman Run and Minister Cr. Higher ground features distinctive landmarks like Stone Hill and the deep cut of Possum Hollow, while numerous forest roads provide access to the timbered reaches of the Allegheny National Forest.
