About this map

Hiwassee River and its numerous river-crossing points define the geography of southeast Tennessee in the late nineteenth century. This survey documents a landscape structured by the Southern R.R. and the Nashville Tellico and Charleston R.R., which connected early industrial and agricultural hubs like Athens and Cleveland. The map reveals the intricate network of water-powered industry at Longs Mills and Chestuee Mills, alongside the essential river commerce facilitated by Graves Ferry, Kincannon Ferry, and Bunker Hill Ferry. To the southeast, the terrain rises sharply toward Beans Mountain and Big Frog Mountain, where landmarks like Oswald Dome and Sugar Loaf overlook the Conasauga River. This era shows the region just before modern bridge-building replaced the legacy of fords and ferries, such as the Helderbrand Ford and Savannah Ford.
