Mesa de Maya and the sprawling Cobert Mesa dominate this high-desert landscape in southeastern Las Animas County. The terrain is defined by a complex network of drainages and dramatic landforms, including the prominent Seven L Buttes and the winding The Hogback. Historically significant for its open range and ranching legacy, the area is dissected by numerous named canyons such as Honeymoon Canyon, Steel Trap Canyon, and Rodriques Canyon, which provided vital sheltered routes through the high plateau country.
