Cottonwood Basin and the adjacent plateau country of Montrose County are defined by a network of high mesas and deep drainage gulches, much of which is protected within the Uncompahgre National Forest. The landscape is a study in high-altitude water management, featuring a dense concentration of small-scale irrigation and stock water systems. Numerous family-named and numbered water features, such as the Harry White Reservoirs, Lee Reservoir, and Big Monitor Reservoir Number 1, indicate the historical importance of localized water storage for ranching and forest management.
