The Allagash River flows along the western edge of this remote Aroostook County landscape, punctuated by the namesake Cunliffe Islands. This 2011 survey captures a portion of the North Maine Woods, where the terrain is defined by water systems and timber management infrastructure rather than towns. Significant elevations like Shepherd Brook Mountain and Glazier Brook Mountain overlook a network of remote ponds and brooks. Access to this wilderness is maintained through a system of unpaved arteries, most notably the Realty Rd, which winds through the center of the quadrangle. To the south, the waters of Umsaskis Lake and Glazier Pond serve as critical landmarks for navigators of this wooded interior. The map illustrates a modern era of logging and recreational use in a region that has remained largely unsettled for centuries.
