The Hole in the Rock Trail cuts across the high northwestern landscape of Grey Mesa, following the path of the famous 1879–1880 pioneer expedition. This 2017 survey details the complex interface of water and stone within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, where the San Juan River widens into the San Juan Arm and Piute Bay. The terrain is defined by deep incisions in the desert floor, notably the eponymous Deep Canyon and the winding Piute Canyon to the south.
