Beartooth National Scenic Byway winds through this high-elevation alpine landscape, crossing the notable Beartooth Pass near the northern boundary of the Shoshone National Forest. This section of the Beartooth plateau is defined by a dense concentration of glacial features and high peaks, including Quintuple Peaks and the jagged profile of Sawtooth Mtn. The hydrology is remarkably complex, characterized by an array of high-country water bodies such as Gardner Lake, Sawtooth Lake, and Deep Lake, which sits adjacent to the Deep Lake Slide Area.
