The settlement of Delhi anchors this southern Colorado landscape, positioned near the junction of several county boundaries where Las Animas, Otero, and Pueblo counties meet. The terrain is defined by a series of dramatic drainages and elevation changes, including Devils Canyon and Plum Canyon which cut through the high plains. The arid character of the region is punctuated by managed water features such as Lyons Reservoir and Tanner Reservoir, as well as the seasonal flow of Timpas Cr and Poitrey Arroyo.

Part of the Comanche National Grassland dominates the northeast quadrant, preserving the open character of the shortgrass prairie. To the southeast, the Bloom Hills rise above the surrounding flats, while the Poitrey Arroyo Hills provide topographic variety to the west. This survey illustrates the sparse, ranching-oriented infrastructure of the era, marked by a network of rural routes like Co RD 121 that connect isolated landmarks like Hixon Spring.
