Devils Peak and the surrounding high-elevation Divide dominate this portion of the Cascade Range, where the Rogue River National Forest meets the Winema National Forest. This wilderness area is defined by the Seven Lakes Basin, a concentrated cluster of alpine water bodies including Lake Ivern, Lake Alta, and Cliff Lake. The landscape is characterized by a network of drainage systems such as the Middle Fork Rogue River and Sevenmile Cr, which descend from ridges named with a peculiar thematic flair, from Venus and Jupiter to the dark volcanic heights of Lucifer and Shale Butte.
