Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through the high ridges of the Cherokee National Forest along the border of Carter and Johnson counties. This high-altitude landscape is characterized by a series of narrow mountain valleys, most notably Shady Valley, where the headwaters of Beaverdam Cr collect from various forks. The settlement pattern follows the drainage of Doe Cr, connecting small communities like Pandora, Damascus, and Doeville before the waters reach Watauga Lake at the southern edge of the survey.
