Duck Creek Butte and the surrounding high desert of Malheur Co are defined by a complex network of water management features designed for this arid landscape. The 2014 survey reveals an extensive system of small reservoirs, including Twin Buttes Reservoir, Deadman Cr Reservoir Number One, and Mustang Reservoir, which are scattered across the high flats and along the drainages of Indian Creek. These man-made catchments, often named for local landmarks like Post Mountain or Barren Valley, highlight the critical importance of water storage for ranching and land use in eastern Oregon.
