About this map

El Cajon Valley and the surrounding San Diego back country appear here in a state of early transition, documented by surveyors A. P. Davis and Jeremiah Ahern. The most striking engineering feature is the San Diego Flume, a massive wooden water conduit winding across the hills and through several bores including the Lankersheim Tunnel and Los Coches Tunnel. This infrastructure was vital for the irrigation of the valley's growing agricultural industry.
