Ash Creek Junction and the eastern outskirts of McCloud anchor this 2015 survey of the southern Siskiyou highlands. Much of the terrain is defined by the Shasta National Forest, where a network of forest service and secondary roads like Pilgrim Creek Rd and Military Pass Rd cross the volcanic landscape. The hydrography of the region is notably active, with several significant water sources including Elk Spring, Widow Spring, and Esperanza Spring feeding into drainages such as Pilgrim Cr and Mud Cr. These springs and seasonal creeks reveal the drainage patterns characteristic of the high-elevation forests near the base of the Cascades. The presence of Red Hill and numerous forest tracks like Widow Springs Rd and Wintoon Way illustrate the area's use for timber management, fire access, and outdoor recreation in the modern era.
