The Cowanesque River flows through the northern reaches of this Tioga County landscape, defining the valley where the boroughs of Elkland and Osceola are established. Just south of the New York state line, the area transitions from the river valley floor up into the highlands of Deerfield and Farmington townships. Evidence of local industry and infrastructure is visible in the network of pipelines crossing the terrain and a Gravel Pit near Nelson.

Genealogists will find a high concentration of family-named landmarks and historical sites throughout the rural uplands. Several small burial grounds, including Taylor Cem and Peters Cem, are scattered across the hillsides, often near remote crossroads like Karls Corners. Religious and community centers such as Farmington Ch and Butler Hill Ch serve as focal points for the dispersed settlements of Elbridge and Shinglebury in the southern portion of the quadrangle.
