About this map

Southern Railway and Louisville and Nashville tracks cross this pre-Manhattan Project landscape, following the narrow corridors between the ridges of the Tennessee Valley. The Clinch River and Emory River dominate the southern and western portions of the quadrangle, with the Gallagher Ferry still providing a vital river crossing before the valley's hydro-electric transformation. Rural life is anchored by a network of small community institutions like Orchard View Sch, Sugar Grove Sch, and Coal Hill Ch. The settlement of Wheat stands in the eastern portion of the map, representing a community that would soon be fundamentally altered by the creation of the Oak Ridge reservation. The terrain is defined by the northeast-to-southwest orientation of Black Oak Ridge and Chestnut Ridge, which dictated the early placement of roads such as State Highway No 61.
