About this map

Manitou Payment and the small coastal settlement of Brevoort occupy the northern shoreline of Lake Michigan in this early 1930s survey. The landscape is defined by its extensive drainage network, where the Brevoort River and Cut River flow southward toward the lake, and the South Branch Carp River meanders through the marshy northern interior. The arrival of U S Highway No 2 reflects the early expansion of regional travel infrastructure along the Upper Peninsula's southern coast, cutting a straight path through the low-lying terrain. To the east, the basin of Little Brevoort Lake sits tucked behind the shoreline, surrounded by wetlands and small creeks like Paquin Cr. This mapping, compiled in part from Air Corps aerial photographs, provides an early look at the Mackinac County coast before later 20th-century development altered the local road and waterway patterns.
