About this map

The Marquette National Forest dominates this northern Michigan landscape, where the border of Chippewa and Mackinac counties meets in a complex network of wetlands and river drainage. The settlement of Wilwin and its associated Wilwin Sta serve as central points for the regional timber and transport economy of the early 1930s. This survey, compiled in part from Air Corps aerial photographs, reveals a transition in transportation as the rail lines of the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic and the Minneapolis St Paul and Sault Ste Marie intersect with the emerging automobile infrastructure of State Highway No 48. The hydrological character of the Upper Peninsula is evident in the sprawling marshes surrounding Carp Lake, Trout Lake, and the upper reaches of the Carp River, illustrating the challenges of development in this saturated terrain.
