Fence Lake dominates this northwoods landscape, serving as a central hub for the interconnected waterways of the Lac du Flambeau reservation. In the mid-2010s, the small settlement of Marlands and the edge of Lac du Flambeau mark the primary areas of human concentration amidst a dense network of glacial lakes and wetlands. The geography is defined by narrow land bridges and winding shorelines, such as those surrounding Shishebogama Lake and Gunlock Lake. A complex system of local roads and trails, including Pokegama Lake Trl and Thoroughfare Rd, provide access to private landings and recreation spots across the Vilas and Oneida County line. The eastern portion of the map transitions into the expansive Mishonagon Swamp, illustrating the natural drainage patterns that feed into the Tomahawk River system.
