The North Fork Stillaguamish River corridor defines this portion of the Washington Cascades, where the small settlements of Fortson, Barco, and Swede Heaven sit along the valley floor. To the north, the terrain rises sharply into the Mount Baker National Forest, marked by high-altitude features such as Segelsen Ridge, Coney Pass, and Harry Lake. The landscape is etched with numerous forest development roads, such as Natl Forest Develop 18 Rd, which provide access to the timbered slopes above the river.

Evidence of historical industry is found near Fortson, where Fortson Mill Pond and Fortson Ponds indicate the importance of water management for local mills. South of the river, the massive presence of White Horse dominates the horizon, with drainage through Ashton Cr and Squire Cr feeding into the main river system. This survey captures a balance between the managed national forest lands and the rural valley communities connected by the Arlington-Darrington Rd.
