Fox Creek and the surrounding high-altitude terrain of the Rio Grande National Forest define this 2013 survey of Conejos County. The Conejos River meanders through the central valley, supported by an irrigation network that includes the Las Mesitas Ditch and Cañon Ditch. These waterways historically sustained the small settlements of Cañon and Fox Creek, where local history is preserved at the Fox Creek Cem and Las Mesitas Cem. The landscape is a mix of forest management and ranching tradition, evidenced by the presence of the Big Corral and numerous Forest Development Roads such as FDR 103. High points like Los Mogotes overlook a complex system of canyons and gulches, including Conoboy Canyon and Massey Gulch, while travelers cross the river via Broyles Bridge along Co-17.
