The Rogue River dominates this portion of the Siskiyou National Forest, carving a deep path through the canyonlands of Josephine County. The settlement of Galice serves as a focal point along the river, positioned near the historic Old Channel mining area. Upstream, the riverside hamlets of Rand and Almeda Bar sit tucked between steep gulches, while the river's technical character is marked by features like Ennis Riffle and Old Man Riffle. The terrain is characterized by a dense network of drainage systems, including Taylor Creek which flows through the Taylor Creek Gorge. Significant elevation changes are evident from the riverbanks up to Buckhorn Mountain, with the eastern landscape transitioning toward the dramatic Hellgate Canyon and the landmark Hellgate Bridge.
