Mojave National Preserve and the southern reaches of Castle Mountains National Monument define this portion of the High Desert. The landscape is characterized by the wide expanse of Lanfair Valley, where the small settlement of Lanfair sits at the junction of Ivanpah Rd and Cedar Canyon Rd. The topography is marked by distinct geological formations including the Grotto Hills and Lanfair Buttes, which rise abruptly from the Mojave Desert floor.
