McKenzie Junction serves as a primary navigation point where mountain roads converge within the high-elevation landscape of Custer County. This area of the San Isabel National Forest is defined by the significant peaks of the Wet Mountains, including Hardscrabble Mtn, Arkansas Mtn, and Lead Mtn. The drainage patterns here are complex, with numerous gulches such as Rattlesnake Gulch, Poison Gulch, and Bettis Gulch feeding into larger systems like Lewis Creek and Middle Hardscrabble Cr. The settlement at Cold Spring and the presence of named elevations like Adobe Peak and Mock Hill illustrate a geography shaped by both high-altitude forestry and the historic cattle and mining routes of the region. A network of county roads, including Co RD 274 and Cold Springs Rd, provides access to these remote reaches of the San Isabel range.
