Silver Lake Pioneer Cem and other burial sites provide a look into the early heritage of this Clay County landscape. Located south of Hawley, the terrain is defined by a dense concentration of small water bodies, including Maria Lake, Perch Lake, and Silver Lake, many of which appear to be namesake features for the surrounding community. The path of the Buffalo River cuts across the northern section, while Hay Cr drains the southern townships. A rigid grid of county roads, such as Co HWY 31 and Co RD 12, segments the prairie, connecting the various farmsteads and rural properties. Local family names are reflected in features like Jegtvig Lake, Anfinson Lake, and Softing Lake, which indicate the long-standing agricultural and residential patterns of the area during the early twenty-first century.
