The Sweet Grass Hills rise sharply from the northern Montana plains in this survey, dominated by prominent summits such as Mt Royal and Mt Brown. This high-elevation terrain is characterized by a complex network of drainages, including Bear Gulch, Ribbon Gulch, and Porter Gulch, which cut through the southern slopes. Further south, the landscape transitions into more level prairie, marked by the namesake Haystack Butte and the small community of Hill.
