The town of Herrick sits at the northern edge of this Gregory County landscape, defined by a grid of rural roads and the deep drainages of Ponca Cr and its tributaries. A network of small, scattered burial grounds provides a window into the area's local history and cultural heritage, including the Milks Camp Episcopal Cem, Ponca Creek Cem, and Saint Francis Xavier Cem. The terrain is deeply incised by watercourses such as Blue Eyes Cr, Willow Cr, and the notably named Oscar Micheaux Cr, which flows through the southern section of the quadrangle. Several small water bodies, including Herrick Lake and Indian Lake, are interspersed among the high plains, illustrating the water-management patterns of the South Dakota prairie.
