About this map

Pine Ridge Indian Reservation occupies the southern half of this landscape, its northern reaches defined by the Reservation Boundary shared with Pennington and Shannon Counties. The terrain is characterized by high, flat-topped plateaus known as tables, including Heutmacher Table and Zebell Table, which rise sharply above a complex network of dry washes. These drainages, such as Big Corral Draw and Little Corral Draw, create a highly dissected topography that funnels toward Fodder Creek in the northeast. The presence of Cottonwood Pass suggests a vital natural route through the steep escarpments, illustrating how local movement was constrained by the alternating flat tablelands and deeply eroded draws typical of the Missouri River Basin development area during the early 1950s.
