Highlands sits at the heart of this high-elevation landscape, where the Eastern Continental Divide separates the Cullasaja River basin from the headwaters of the Chattooga River. This 2019 survey captures the developed character of the plateau town, including the grid of Main St and N 4th St near Harris Lake. Beyond the town center, the terrain is defined by massive rock formations and sheer drops, such as the Whiteside Mtn and the Wildcat Cliffs, which look down upon Whiteside Cove and Horse Cove.
