About this map

Hillsville and the high ridges of the Blue Ridge dominate this late-nineteenth-century landscape, where industrial activity and mountain transport define the local economy. The southern portion of the sheet traces the Virginia North Carolina Boundary Line, connecting the settlements of Mt. Airy and Lambsburg. A dense network of mineral extraction and processing is evident along the river systems, notably at Barren Spgs.Furnace, Boom Furnace, and Radford Furnace, supported by the Norfolk and Western RR in the northwest. Travel across the difficult terrain relied on established mountain passes and river crossings like Pipers Gap and Jackson Ferry. Genealogists may find interest in the numerous named heights such as Queensberrys Knob and Mitchells Knob, as well as rural post offices including Star P.O. and Pipers Gap P.O. that served these remote upland communities.
