1886 Map of Honey Lake

USGS Topo · Published 1886

About this map

The vast Honey Lake basin and the surrounding high desert plateaus of northeastern California are documented here just as early ranching and timber interests began to take hold. Surveyed under the direction of J.W. Powell, the landscape is dominated by large interior drainage lakes including Eagle Lake and Horse Lake. The settlement pattern centers on Susanville, which serves as the primary hub along Susan Creek. To the south, the transition into the higher Sierra Nevada peaks is marked by the settled agricultural basins of Indian Valley near Taylorsville and Greenville.
