The windward Kohala coastline is defined by dramatic cliffs and deep river valleys in this 2013 survey. Settlements are concentrated in the northwest corner near Niuli'i and Makapala, while the remainder of the landscape is dominated by a series of steep gulches and coastal inlets. The map illustrates a transitional zone where the road network ends at the Pololū Valley Lookout, giving way to the remote reaches of Pololū Valley and beyond.

Evidence of historical scientific activity is found deep in the interior with the Old USGS Camp and New USGS Camp located near the headwaters of the Kaimū Stream. The coastal geography is marked by distinctive features such as Laupāhoehoe Nui and Laupāhoehoe Iki, which demonstrate the erosion patterns of the Island of Hawai'i. Numerous seasonal and perennial watercourses like Honokāne Nui Stream and Waimanu Valley drain the high windward slopes into the Pacific, creating a landscape of isolated valleys and prominent headlands like Akoakoa Point.
