Deep ravines and narrow creek valleys define the geography of this rural corner of Cattaraugus County, where the settlements of Humphrey and Sugartown are tucked between steep ridgelines. The landscape is characterized by a series of hollows—named for early families and geography—such as Bear Hollow, Pumpkin Hollow, and Slocum Hollow. These corridors follow the path of local waterways like Wrights Cr and Fivemile Cr, which dictated the layout of the road network and original homesteads. Genealogists will find several small burial grounds marking the history of these communities, including Sugartown Cem near Forks Creek and Cole Cem north of Humphrey Center. The rugged topography has preserved much of its character, with many roads still bearing the names of the hollows they traverse, such as Snow Brook Rd and Irish Hollow Rd.
