Hurley Flat and its surrounding high desert landscape are defined by a complex network of seasonal water catchments and drainage systems in Malheur County. The terrain is marked by significant elevations such as Freezeout Mtn in the north and Sourdough Mtn to the east, which frame the Freezeout Basin. Water management is central to the area's geography, evidenced by numerous named stock ponds and reservoirs including Washboard Reservoir, Sheep Cr Reservoir, and the uniquely named Upper Slim and Fatty Reservoir.
