About this map

The East Fork White River winds through the northwestern corner of this territory, defining the landscape near Norman Rock Bend and Devils Elbow. Much of the rugged terrain in Martin County is preserved within the Martin County State Forest, which surrounds isolated valley settlements and historic country schoolhouses like Center Point Sch and Wiesbach Sch. The Baltimore and Ohio railroad serves as the primary industrial corridor, following the course of Beaver Creek through the small village of Huron. Genealogists will find several family and community burial grounds, including Elliott Cem and Huron Cem, tucked into the hills. The map illustrates a mid-century rural economy where small-scale agriculture and timber lands were interconnected by a winding network of unimproved roads and creek crossings such as Sulphur Creek and Sana Creek.
