Illinois Peak stands as a central landmark along the high divide of the Bitterroot Range, marking the border between Idaho and Montana. This 2020 survey documents a landscape defined by its mineral history and protected wilderness, where the Lolo National Forest meets the St Joe National Forest. The presence of the Golden Sunset Mine and numerous named gulches like Grubstake Gulch and Bonanza Gulch speak to the area’s legacy of prospecting. High-altitude water bodies, including Missoula Lake and Saint Joe Lake, serve as the headwaters for local drainages like Wisdom Creek and the Saint Joe Wild and Scenic River. The map also traces established mountain routes such as the Cedar Creek Rd No 320 and Freezout Rd, which navigate the steep gaps at Miller Saddle and Freezout Pass.
