The Continental Divide serves as the backbone for this high-altitude landscape where the borders of Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest, and Arapaho National Forest meet. This terrain is characterized by a high concentration of glacial lakes and dramatic summits, including Isolation Peak, Mount Alice, and Chiefs Head Peak. The eastern drainage flows through Wild Basin, feeding into North Saint Vrain Creek via a chain of water bodies such as Thunder Lake and Lion Lake Number 1. On the western slope, the East Inlet drains Lake Verna and Spirit Lake. A network of backcountry routes, including the Buchanan Pass Trail 910 and St Vrain Glacier Trail 917, provides a record of the early 21st-century trail system through this protected wilderness, marking established crossings like Boulder-Grand Pass and Cony Pass.
