The rugged transition between the high mesas and the western boundary of the Tonto National Forest is marked by deep incisions like Alkali Canyon and Lousy Canyon.

Named peaks and drainage systems like Joes Hill and Badger Spring Wash provide essential landmarks for navigation across Perry Mesa. The network of water management features, from Ruins Tank to Lousy Tank, reflects the ongoing importance of water rights and livestock management in this arid reach of Arizona.
