The East Rift Zone dominates this easternmost point of Hawaii, where recent volcanic activity has fundamentally reshaped the land. Visible scarring from the Lava Flow of 1955 and the subsequent Lava Flow of 1960 shows how eruptive events overran earlier topography, including the area near Kapoho. Despite the volcanic threats, human activity remains present in the small coastal settlements of Pohoiki and Pualaa.

Geographical interest centers on Cape Kumukahi, home to a U S Coast Guard Reservation and its beacon. The landscape features several volcanic landmarks, most notably the Kapoho Crater which contains Green Lake. The network of coastal points such as Hala Point and Kapoho Point are interspersed with protected lands like the Nanawale Forest Reserve and the Mackenzie State Recreation Area along the southern shoreline.
