Volcanic activity and water management define this portion of the Kau District on the Island of Hawaii. The landscape is sharply divided between the dense vegetation of the Kaalaala Forest Reserve and the stark, open expanse of the Lava Flow of 1926. The geologic history of the area is further evidenced by a prominent Lava Flow Line and numerous named puus, such as Puu Kinikini and Hionamoa.
