The town of Kelford and the neighboring settlement of Roxobel anchor this Bertie County landscape during the late 1990s. The region is defined by its agricultural character and extensive wetlands, notably the Wahtom Swamp and the headwaters of the Cashie River. Evidence of the area's agricultural importance is found at the Peanut Belt Research Station near Lewiston.
